The History of the Unitenmas (The Complete Story)

Part 1: Opening

From the end of Discord’s first reign of chaos until the original Nightmare Moon incident, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna ruled Equestria as equal entities of power and authority. It was thought that the present day’s history books remembered everything about that history, but as this scripture is about to reveal, the name of the Element of Magic was not the only thing initially lost to time 1,000 years ago.

After the fall of Discord but before the Nightmare Moon incident, Celestia had a husband who the strongest mage of the time, Eclipseus Unitenma. Little else is known about Eclipseus’ early history, but he had joined forces with the then-current Guard Master, El Cid de Maestro, during the fights against Discord and Sombra. Being made an alicorn for what was supposed to be a pledge of eternity to Celestia, Eclipseus rebuilt the sisters’ modest palace into the Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters, intending to be both a testament of love to Celestia and a testament to the future of the Unitenma bloodline he would start with Celestia and by extention Luna. Eclipseus had intended for this palace to be the birthplace of the Unitenma bloodline, but he had no idea the castle would be doomed to ruin in events to come. He also would not expect Luna to make modifications to his planned masterpiece of architecture that would only be discovered long after the castle was abandoned.

Not long before the original banishment of Nightmare Moon, Celestia had two children. First born was her older son who was named Solaris and two years later her younger daughter Luneria followed. The family was briefly happy and Celestia would even inscribe her knowledge and pride in her family into two tomes named after her children, the Solaris and Luneria tomes. Although the originals would remain in the hooves of Celestia herself long after the original Nightmare Moon was banished, copies of these tomes would be forged by sympathizers of Nightmare Moon in hopes of reviving her early and would end up in the hooves of the Ixion clan 500 years later before being displaced in time in the Half-Moon Wars.

What history would not remember was that on the night Luna became Nightmare Moon, Celestia’s husband Eclipseus took the kids to try to flee Nightmare Moon’s wrath while Celestia desperately tried to reason with her enraged younger sister, hoping to stave off the inevitable banishment in vain as to not risk the Elements of Harmony. Only when it was believed the rest of her family was killed by Nightmare Moon’s unfocused wrath would she finally take up the Elements and banish her own sister, believing for most of the prophesized 1,000 years to pass that she would one day have to find a way to kill her own sister for the loss of her family.

In actuality, when Nightmare Moon tried kill Eclipseus and the kids, Eclipseus teleported out of sight from the palace with a time stone and hid into a pocket realm to protect his children. What he did not realize was that in his desperation, he did not realize the time stone he used was split in half by Nightmare Moon’s magic and the split had trapped the three in a time rift that could in theory cause even immortal alicorns to die and be lost in the void of time he unintentionally took sanctuary in. As to protect his children from accelerated aging even alicorn DNA could not withstand, he put his own children into a slumber of suspended animation to preserve their well-being at the expense of his own lifeforce so his children could survive where he would eventually not be able to. While he was uncertain of how much time passed in the rift, more than 900 years passed in Equestria itself before Eclipseus could finally patch through to his thought-to-be-widowed wife about him being trapped in the time void and with their combined magic reunited the Time Stone he used to allow the trio to escape and reunite with Celestia almost 1,000 years later. It was only then Celestia realized Luna did NOT have blood on her hooves and she truly had made a mistake in banishing her own sister as well as cutting her family’s connection to the Elements of Harmony. The re-union would last for one final precious year before Eclipseus at last died from the effects of the void of time he was trapped un-protected in, leaving Celestia widowed for real and their children without their father.

With the loss of the Unitenma family’s founding patriarch, Celestia hid away her children in plain sight by having them take up false identities as to not lose them to Nightmare Moon a second time or to others like Discord and Sombra, both being other villains of Celestia’s past who would return during the resurgence of the Elements of Harmony. However, her actions to protect her children at all cost would soon cause strain with one of own children she tried to protect and lead to a new type of crisis that would blow out the understanding of history as everypony in the modern day knew it.

The biological heirs of Celestia would rise again in the most unexpected of ways and places possible and their own stories begin anew, for only the heirs to the Unitenma clan can unlock the final secret resting in the Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters that Eclipseus only entrusted to those of HIS blood. While he never got to return to the castle of his children’s birth, one of his children will soon be drawn nearthe land of their birth that the Everfree Forest has now consumed.

“Sunset leads the moon to rise and nightfall in term leads the sun to reprise its sacred dawn across the sky. Such balance shall be the Unitenma’s pride.” –Eclipseus Unitenma

Part 2: Luneria Unitenma, the Prodigy Daughter of Celestia

The younger daughter of Eclipseus and Celestia, she disguised herself as Fleur de Lis after the death of her father and she and Solaris were to conceal their real heritage. While her brother would not fare so well with this handicap, she was more resourceful and fortunate in finding Fancy Pants who’d treat her like a princess without knowing she was in fact one. Managing to snag Fancy away from the then single Upper Crust, Luneria had become very involved in not only the Canterlot aristocracy, but the Manehatten aristocracy as well due to having various connections there. She would keep in contact with her brother in secret, but in public she was known simply as Fleur de Lis, Fancy Pants’ “too divine to be” supermodel wife. Luneria’s decision to marry Fancy Pants was out of needing an older and more mature gentlecolt, due to her own need for a mature stallion and somepony who’d eventually be ready for the immortality that’d come with being the husband to Celestia’s daughter.

Not long into her marriage with Fancy Pants, she took in a lost and orphaned stallion named Owen and adopted him as her son. While Fancy Pants at first felt uneasy about “Fleur’s” decision to adopt so soon into their marriage, she naturally turned out to have motherly instincts that would bring peace to the troubled colt’s soul. As Fleur, Luneria instilled everything she knew about the upper-class life of Canterlot into Owen, molding him into the loyal stallion he’d be known as to Bio by the time Bio was looking for an apprentice. Having earned the approval of the spirit of Owen’s biological mother, Angel Wing, Luneria would peacefully enjoy her family life with Fancy and Owen as Fleur de Lis even after a great change was to come…

…in the form of half of a venue for a charity dinner being torched the night before it was to be held. By this point in time, Owen had become friends with his immortal predecessor, El Cid de Maestro, who had recently returned to Equestria as both started adventuring together around the same time Colt Magnum had arrived in Ponyville. Both shared a common interest in the well-being of Equestria and Cid was even able to act as Owen’s advisor, due to Owen being relatively new to active leadership over the guards and Cid having done such duties previously. Both had shared a disdain for Blueblood, due to how badly he treated mares and how bratty he acted. However, while Luneria could forbid Owen from throttling Blueblood, Cid had no such connections to hold him back and on a day Cid was to personally protect Blueblood among other Canterlot elite at that time, Cid was last seen confronting Blueblood about his haughty actions and particularly giving Blueblood grief about how badly he mistreated Rarity before he was found unconscious at the burnt venue of the charity dinner.

While Fancy and Owen were both panic-stricken about Cid’s otherwise mysterious injuries, Luneria realized the truth revolved around her older brother who had also had to hide his true heritage away and that the pony who had lashed out against Cid and torched the venue was NOT a corrupted Blueblood, but rather her troubled older brother Solaris pushed over the edge. Unable to hide her true heritage any longer thanks to her brother’s fit of rage, Luneria at last revealed her true heritage to her family to explain what she knew about why this incident would ever happen and the help she expected she would need in quelling her brother’s rage. She would not be aware until she tracked her brother down to Ponyville with her Aunt Luna’s help that Solaris received help from perhaps the most unlikely source possible.

Part 3: Solaris Unitenma, the Cursed Son of Celestia

The older son of Eclipseus Unitenma and proud of his father’s bloodline, there’s been a disharmony in Solaris’ soul ever since his father died, worsened only by the fact Celestia expected Solaris and Luneria to hide away for their safety rather than take up arms for their father’s honor. Due to the fact ponies would fear Solaris’ true aggressive nature and fearsome power, Celestia insisted on him hiding his true potential for the sake of safety and protection, forcing him to don the despicable facade of Prince Blueblood Solaris himself would despise the most of all ponies. Because of how alien Blueblood was to the real Solaris, no one in Canterlot suspected they were one bad day away from a supernova of bottled-up rage.

However, Blueblood was not always the broken despicable mess he’d be known to be by the time of the gala, for there was a time Solaris had not yet put up the act that would define Blueblood’s “annoying” traits. Around eight years before Nightmare Moon’s return, under the guise of Blueblood, he came across a mare who he felt was unique and different from everyone else in Canterlot, all of whom were not family being described as “fake, insincere, shallow and superficial” albeit only in Solaris’ own hidden journals. This mare turned out to be none other than Celestia’s then current apprentice, Sunset Shimmer. While he would try to convince himself only Blueblood loved Sunset, Solaris himself sought freedom from his restrictive façade and hoped Sunset would grant him such freedom if he could make her fall in love with him. While she was aloof and arrogant, the two at first had a stable relationship that lasted for two whole years undisturbed. Solaris increasingly felt certain he was willing to invest everything into Sunset not only to be able to reveal his true identity, but also find a mare he could call his own that would leave Celestia no choice but to let him fight by her side.

He remained unaware of the fact his life would soon become cursed by his knowing Sunset Shimmer, for her arrogance went beyond any point Solaris could soothe by being her beloved Prince Blueblood. While Solaris had obeyed his mother and went to great lengths to conceal his true heritage, Sunset had found a feather poking out from his suit at a royal dinner at an insignificant time and on a day like any other made it seem like she and “Blueblood” were going on a date as a couple, which Celestia seemingly didn’t suspect. It was then “Blueblood” was confronted with Sunset’s truly immense greed and lust for power, insisting on royal privileges equal to that of Celestia herself and even to become an alicorn, which started tearing apart Solaris himself apart on the inside realizing she had no intention of reciprocating his feelings for her and even was willing to use them to blackmail him into obedience. When Celestia revealed her presence, she tried to calm her angered son-in-diguise and placate Sunset’s greedy nature however she needed to as to prevent Solaris and Luneria’s identities from being compromised…

…what no one would remember would be six years prior to the return of the Elements of Harmony, a heat wave had briefly plagued Equestria said to have come out of nowhere that even some changeling colonies had been destroyed over the heat wave. What none would realize was that on that day, when Sunset was blackmailing Celestia and Solaris, his compassion had been undone to the point rather than appeasing Sunset’s wishes, he broke his veil of secrecy and unleashed his true identity, seeking to kill her on the spot for the betrayal, outrage that she felt she had to blackmail for what he would’ve wanted and not understanding he would’ve given her her wish if she had pursued it out of love rather than fear. Realizing Solaris truly would do ANYTHING to end the veil of secrecy there and then even if it meant risking losing him and Luneria like she did her husband, Celestia incapacitated Solaris with a sleeping spell to ensure he could do no further harm with his uncontrollable rage before outright throwing Sunset Shimmer through the Mirror Portal in hopes Sunset would remain lost in another world and away from her son. The Mirror Portal was then locked away for many years until the eventual return of the Crystal Empire. However, when Solaris awoke, he found his desire for revenge would seemingly be unfulfilled for eternity, cursing his mother for not allowing him to kill Sunset after Sunset had shown she truly knew no loyalties to anyone. Celestia tried to comfort her son, saying Solaris shouldn’t burden himself with judging Sunset’s fate lest he turn himself into a being of hatred. Emotionally destroyed he lost his one chance to end the silence over his family and avenge his betrayal, Solaris would refuse to trust anyone again for the next seven years, reconstructing the Blueblood persona to do anything to remain alone and in peace with the ironic backfire others mares would seek the ideal prince he ironically felt even LESS suitable to be as his true self.

One example of Solaris’ true nature increasingly interfering with his family obligation to uphold his Blueblood front for his Mother’s wishes would be while as Blueblood he deliberately threw the date with Rarity in the Great Galloping Gala by Celestia’s insistence he brings her down lightly. Solaris found he was ready to once again break the veil of secrecy because as himself, he DESPISED Rarity’s personality type, finding a mare like her pursuing a perfect prince to be the reason he could not be himself around others. He purposely acted unusually unbearable around her hoping to scare her off, which most of the logical Canterlot folks could account for the fake “Blueblood” as they knew him was usually semi-reasonable. The more Rarity persisted, the more Solaris’ own anger boiled to the point he had in fact briefly broken his secrecy by eating from Applejack’s food stand and only reacting as “Blueblood” once the two mares pointed out what he was eating. It came to a point that were it not for a well-timed cake flying towards himself and Rarity, he would’ve thrown Rarity out the window in a fit of unresolvable rage rather than just put her in the path of the cake. It was said after the Gala “Blueblood” once again became increasingly withdrawn, rarely ever coming out to the public asides from when he needed to.

Solaris hit a low point when Twilight was crowned as a Princess and made an alicorn, increasingly crushing his sanity despite Celestia trying to comfort him as well as Luneria. At last, however, the final breaking point for him was when he was faced down with El Cid de Maestro, a fervent pursuer of Rarity’s love as well as a friend of Luneria’s foster son, Owen. Although Luneria as Fleur would warn Solaris not to resent Owen or Cid for how strongly they were against Blueblood’s actions, Cid outright refused to provide the usual bodyguards for another routine charity dinner, due to how disgusted he was at how “Blueblood” treated women. While likely it would clash with even Owen’s more peaceful wishes, Cid started lashing out on “Blueblood”, claiming he was unworthy of being a prince and should leave Canterlot to a REAL princess, even going as far as to insist RARITY was more royalty than “Blueblood” was.

“No more…I SHALL ALLOW THIS DEFILEMENT OF MY FAMILY NO MORE! HOW DARE YOU BETRAY MY FATHER’S BLOODLINE AND REPLACE IT WITH TWO RANDOM MARES WHO HAVE MADE MOTHER FORGET ABOUT ME! HER SON AND HER OWN FAMILY!” It was when Cid heard these words and saw “Blueblood” light up in flames he realized he was not dealing with “Blueblood” anymore, but rather the forgotten and now hateful solar prince, Solaris. In one supernova of anger torching over half of the charity dinner venue, Blueblood was no more and the silence of the Unitenmas was now forcefully lifted by Solaris’ fit of rage. Solaris would briefly lose all control of his emotions lashing out on Cid until Cid finally understood too late Solaris was the very same son of his former friend, Eclipseus, and was horrified he was left in the dark about the return of the Unitenmas. Though Cid fell unconscious, Solaris would truly associate Canterlot as the root of his pain and flew away into the sunrise as far as he could from Canterlot, not daring to look back and refusing to consider the panic that Blueblood’s sudden erasure could cause…as far as Solaris was concerned, Blueblood was never real and now there would only be the true son of Celestia that would never again bend to the will of those seeking to defame his father’s honor, not even his own mother.

“Mother has truly forsaken Father…sister and I have been replaced in the public eye…DAMN IT, MOTHER! I SHALL NEVER RESPECT YOUR WISHES EVER AGAIN! NOT IF IT MEANS SEEING MY FAMILY’S LEGACY BE WIPED OUT! AND FOR WHAT!? SOME RANDOM MARE WHO CARES NOTHING ABOUT ME!?”

Solaris truly felt torn apart, his rage causing a premature sunrise against Celestia’s will until finally he fell from the sky and into an apple tree of a farm he did not realize would offer the asylum from his troubled life he sought for so long. Taking a bite from an apple to truly shed any traits of Blueblood, Solaris sat under the leaves of the Apple Tree where he would soon meet a certain honest mare who’d ironically light a spark in Solaris’ heart not seen since Sunset Shimmer betrayed him.

Part 4: Eclipseus Unitenma, the Great Will of the Unitenmas

The patriarch of Celestia’s own family outside of Luna as well as Cadance later on, Eclipseus had been the only mortal Celestia ever showed romantic interest in, due to his fervent loyalty to Celestia. Such loyalty shown as a unicorn the second-in-command of the then-current Guard Master, El Cid de Maestro, Cid gave the good word for Celestia to convert him into an immortal alicorn for an eternal mate and what was intended to be a path to Celestia eventually ascending to the status of Queen of Equestria. Because the only Queen Equestria had ruled up in the Heavens, Eclipseus sought to make his love for Celestia a testament of immortality. It was his architectural redesign that the Castle of the Two Sisters became famous for in terms of appearance and history, showing as an alicorn he was able to make full use of architecture experience he carried over from his unicorn days. Little is known about his earlier projects, but he would personally lead on grand builds that were intended to cut a path through the uncontrollable Everfree Forest and keep the Elements of Harmony in close proximity to the Tree of Harmony. He had hoped doing so would make the forest more manageable and hospitable for ponykind, but this wish would end up going unfulfilled with the closest he’d ever get to his wish being the foundation of Ponyville about 900 years after the Castle of the Two Sisters was constructed and then destroyed.

Despite his love for his children, Eclipseus became distrustful towards Luna, Celestia’s sister, particularly for making unauthorized modifications to the castle’s interior design to include various traps and gags for the amusements of the sisters themselves even as Celestia was pregnant with Solaris and later Luneria. Beginning to worry Celestia and Luna’s immaturity would be a liability to his children’s inheritance and upbringing, Eclipseus began hiding away secret stashes he would not entrust Celestia and Luna to handle should something happen to him or the kids. It is unknown if Luna ever caught on to what Eclipseus was doing, but if she did it could’ve explained the bitterness Luna felt towards him when she became Nightmare Moon.

During Nightmare Moon’s bitter rampage, she sought to kill Eclipseus and the kids to be undisputed as the Queen of the Night, due to Luneria being a child of Celestia who could control the moon and in theory COMPLETELY leave Luna with no inheritance. However, Eclipseus held a time stone that could let him travel through different periods in time to escape fixed points in time he usually should’ve died at, due to a curse put on his family as a colt in the age of Discord when Discord sought to prevent order from being re-established at any cost.. When he used it to protect his children, Nightmare Moon’s magic still struck it enough to split it into three pieces, one of which was left behind in Equestria and the other two fragments not being enough to make a full trip out of the void of time he would sometimes travel though in his escapes from pre-destined deaths. He gave the two fragments to his children to put them in suspended animation and protect them from the void of time, but it would do no good if he could not find a way to get Celestia to find the third fragment and reunite the stone. Although he could’ve in theory still withstood the Void of Time’s effects on him for a while due to being an alicorn, Eclipseus took the risk of accelerating the rate at which he would be robbed of his immortality to communicate with Celestia in a future time period. He did not manage to patch through to her until almost 1,000 years later with only 20 years left to go before Nightmare Moon’s prophesized return, which while his kids had been protected from the effects of the void, Eclipseus had unusually aged where while he did not grow a beard like Starswirl the Bearded, he became more faded-looking in his appearance and was robbed of almost all the strength his immortality had given him.

With only a year’s worth of life force left in him, Eclipseus scrambled to understand what had become of the inheritances he left for his kids as well the castle he had once built, due to the fact Celestia’s castle now resided in Canterlot far from the cradle of the Unitenmas he had built 1,000 years ago. He became bitter that Nightmare Moon had all but destroyed the castle he built for Celestia and began constructing devices meant to exact revenge on Nightmare Moon for his family’s displacement and the destruction of the Unitenma’s legacy. Although Celestia begged Eclipseus to just rest peacefully until she could find a way to extend his life, Eclipseus sought to protect the inheritance of his own children no matter the cost, including locking out access to the hidden domains containing inheritances that now only those born of ECLIPSEUS’ blood could access. This would cause issues first with Mi Amore Cadenza, also known as Cadance, who was adopted by Celestia in the absence of a family and later Twilight Sparkle who would be granted alicorn status 20 years later and yet neither would be able to access the secrets Eclipseus was trying to keep exclusively to his own kids while shutting out any would-be extended family.

The keys to such inheritances would be ankle-worn “bells” that would be locked away in a room hidden in the old Castle of the Two Sisters with a seal only Solaris and Luneria would be able to unlock, due to Eclipseus’ death being eminent. However, to appease his wife and to not drive a rift between Cadance and Solaris and Luneria, Eclipseus constructed a third bell for Cadance to be allowed the same priveleges as his own children once Solaris and Luneria accessed the hidden chamber, leaving his children to pass on the third bell to Cadance in hopes they inherited his honor. With this final task complete, he spent the rest of the year with his children before he at last burned up the final portion of his life force and died. His last wishes to his family would be for Celestia to protect their children until the time came for them to take revenge on Nightmare Moon for her crimes against their family and for Solaris and Luneria to return to the land of their birth when they were old enough to inherit the birthright he preserved for them for years to come.

Chapter 5: Eclipseus' Legacy

Following his death, however, Celestia had no intention of following Eclipseus’ vengeful streak against Luna, since her only reason for risking the Elements of Harmony was because she thought Luna had killed her whole family and even with Eclipseus dying by the effects of the Void of Time, her family had been returned to her. Fearing Eclipseus’ plans for revenge against Nightmare Moon being counter-productive to their children’s safety, Celestia instead sought to hide away her children’s identity in plain sight in hopes to avoid the clash of family Eclipseus was willing to trigger as to remove Luna from her life now that her husband was gone. She also would try to persuade her children not to return to the Castle of the Two Sisters, claiming nothing would be there for them to inherit due to the castle’s destroyed state. However, when Solaris would fly towards and take refuge in Ponyville, which had been built near the Everfree Forest where the Castle of the Two Sisters was now left in ruins, he would be compelled to return to the castle of his birth now in tow with Applejack who had also previously visited the castle when she inherited the Element of Honesty. Although Solaris sought revenge against the inheritors of the Elements of Harmony initially, he would soon learn the true nature of not just why the Elements of Harmony went to six new wielders, but the mistake his own mother made 1,000 years ago and finally his new destiny now that the Elements were to rest in the Tree of Harmony for a long time to come…
